Where to Stay in Seoul for First-Time Visitors (2026 Guide)
Pick one Seoul neighborhood for the whole trip. Jongno for palaces, Myeongdong for shops and subway, Hongdae for a younger night, and not a new hotel every night.

Stay in one neighborhood. A first trip is short, and changing hotels burns the morning you wanted for a palace. Hotel prices are not listed here. Check the booking site for your dates, then judge the area with the notes below.
The airport train decides part of this. The all-stop train stops at Hongik University. The Express only stops at Seoul Station, which is a taxi or subway ride from every neighborhood below.
Jongno, Insadong, and Ikseon-dong
This is the old center, north of the river, near the palaces. You can walk to Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, and Insadong if the hotel is actually in this pocket. Nights are calmer than Hongdae. The streets are hilly and the lanes are small, so check the map for the subway exit before you book a place that says “central Seoul.”
Choose it when the trip is palaces, teahouses, and an early night.
Myeongdong
Myeongdong is shops, street food, and a dense subway interchange. It is an easy first base if you want many lines under the hotel and you do not mind crowds and neon. It is not a quiet sleep. Look at the map at 1 a.m. in street view, or read recent reviews that mention noise, before you book a room facing the main street.
Choose it when you want shopping and simple subway rides more than charm.
Hongdae
Hongdae is younger, louder, and open later. The all-stop airport train stops at Hongik University, so the arrival is simpler than a Seoul Station connection. Line 2 runs through the station and loops much of the city, which makes day trips straightforward and the ride home long if you are out at the palaces all day.
Choose it when you want evenings and you do not mind the distance to Gyeongbokgung.
A rule for the booking screen
Filter to one of those three names, not to “Seoul.” Then check the walk to a subway station in Naver Map. Ten minutes on the listing can be twenty with luggage. If the hotel is south of the river and the sights you care about are palaces, pick again.
